Celebrated Tar player passes away

The renowned tar player Farhang Sharif passed away in Tehran on Wednesday.

Sharif, who had physically weakened due to age and health problems, was hospitalized for severe lung infection last month. He was 85, ISNA reported.

Born in the northern city of Amol, Mazandaran Province, Sharif was a well-known musician and renowned tar player.

He learned music from great tar players Abdolhossein Shahnazi and Morteza Ney Davoud but did not follow their path and found his own style. When he was 12, he had his first solo performance in a live radio program.

Sharif collaborated with notable Persian classical singers such as Mohammadreza Shajarian, Akbar Golpaygani, Gholamhossein Banan and Mahmoud Mahmoudi Khansari and Hossein Khajeh Amiri (Iraj).

He participated in international events including the Berlin Music Festival and taught music in several American universities.
