Russias use of Hamadan base is Profitable for Iran

27 Aug 2016 - 15:41

There is no disagreement between Moscow and Tehran over the use of the Irans Hamadan air base by the Russian Aerospace Forces, according to the president of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems, Colonel-General Leonid Ivashov.

"This [cooperation inHamadan] is profitable first and foremost tothe Iranian side and the military. Now duringthe time that we have the right tobe present there, will the Americans or the Israelis prepare an attack onIran, likeit was a few years ago?" It increases the level ofmilitary security forthe Islamic Republic ofIran, Ivashov said duringa press conference atRossiya Segodnya International Information Agency.

At the same time, he stressed that there is no disagreement amongthe military there. Look forthe differences [between Russia and Iran] inthe medium ofdependent journalists, the expert said.

He said that he expects that Russias Sukhoi planes will be liked bythe Iranian military. After assessment ofcooperation onthe Hamadan air base the sailors [Russia and Iran] will also likely think abouthow tocarry outjoint military exercises. On August 16, Russia used Irans Hamadan base amidanti-terror operations inSyria tocarry outairstrikes againstDaesh and al-Nusra Front.

On August 18, the Russian planes left Iran. On Monday, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said that further use ofthe Hamadan airfield forRussias anti-terrorist mission inSyria would be carried outin line withbilateral agreements withthe Islamic republic and events onthe ground. Meanwhile, chairman ofthe Iranian parliamentary committee onforeign policy and national security Alaeddin Boroujerdi said that Russian military aircraft inIran are only allowed torefuel atthe Hamadan airbase inaccordance withexisting agreements.
