2 US police officers shot in San Diego, California

29 Jul 2016 - 13:01

Two US police officers in San Diego, California, were shot Thursday and their conditions are currently unknown.

The San Diego Police Department said the shooting occurred shortly after 11 pm local time and one suspect was arrested around an hour later.

A police spokesperson said an active search is underway for any additional suspects.

Police have urged residents to stay inside in the southeastern neighborhood of San Diego where the incident took place.

The latest police shootings come amid high tensions between law enforcement and black communities in the US.

Over the past month, thousands of demonstrators have flooded the streets of major cities across the country to decry the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, two black men who were killed by police just one day apart.

Their deaths triggered revenge attacks against police by two black military veterans. Five officers were killed in Dallas, Texas and three were killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Over 55,000 people in the United States were either killed or wounded by police in 2012 alone, according to a new study by the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation in Maryland.

The study found that blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans are more likely to get arrested by police compared to white and Asian people.
