Iran wins three bronze medals in Asian cycling championships

Iranian cyclists have bagged three bronze medals in their efforts to mark impressive performance at the 33rd Senior and 20th Junior Asian Cycling Championships in India.
The 27-year-old Mohammad Rajablou gave Iran its first medal at the Asian tournaments on Friday, when he finished third in the points race, marginally behind his opponents from South Korea and Hong Kong who came in first and second respectively.

Later in the day, Alireza Haqqi collected Iran’s second bronze medal in the 4 km-individual pursuit.

Also on Friday, the Iranian team - comprised of Alireza Haqqi and Mohammad Rajablou -finished third in the men’s team pursuit, and won a bronze.

The 33rd Senior and 20th Junior Asian Cycling Championships began in the Indian capital New Delhi on Thursday, and will roll out in two venues till March 17.

The track events will be held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium’s Velodrome followed by the road races at the Buddh International Circuit.

Some 800 cyclists from 29 countries will be pitted against each other in the Asian cycling events.

The 36-member-strong Iranian team, rated among the best at the continental level, boasts of some renowned cyclists, including Mehdi Sohrabi, who was the winner of the Asia Tour in 2010 and 2011.
