Chemical bombing of Iranian city unforgettable: Majlis speaker

Tehran, June 27, IRNA - Effects and consequences of the inhumane chemical attack on the city of Sardasht are not going to be forgotten, says Iran's parliament speaker.


The chemical bombing of Sardasht which led to the demise of up to 110 people and injury of up to 5000 innocent people was a historical catastrophe, Ali Larijani said in a statement released on Monday, on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the chemical bombing of the city located in northwestern Iran by Saddam regime.
Sardasht people are symbol of resistance and patience in the face of difficulties, Larijani said.

He urged officials to do their best to support people of Sardasht and try to reduce their pains.

A ceremony was held today in Sardasht with the presence of chemically injured people and bereaved families of the victims, local officials and Iraqi Kurdistan Region Minister of Martyrs and Anfal Affairs Mahmoud Haji Salih to mark the catastrophic day.

Iraqi war planes targeted with chemical weapons civilians in the city of Sardasht in West Azarbaijan on 28 of June, 1987.

Some 116 citizens of Sardasht were martyred and over 5,000 people were wounded by the deadly chemical attacks.
