UNESCO team inspects liberated Palmyra in Syria

5 May 2016 - 18:25

An international delegation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) permanent member states is carrying out Thursday an inspection of the Site of Palmyra in Syria, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

PALMYRA (Sputnik) – Palmyra and its historic ruins had been under Daesh terrorists' control since May 2015.

On March 27, forces loyal to Damascus, supported by the Russian Aerospace Forces, liberated the city of Palmyra from Daesh, 10 months after its capture. The terrorist group, outlawed in many countries including Russia, has destroyed a significant part of Palmyra's historic ruins, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

According to preliminary estimates, some 20 percent of ancient Palmyra was destroyed, while many exhibits were looted from museums. It could take around five years to restore the city.
