Palestinian Authority premier urges EU to boycott Israeli products

5 Apr 2016 - 0:22

Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah has called on the European Union (EU) to boycott products made in Israeli settlements and to recognize Palestine as a state.

“We urge EU countries to stop the import of Israeli goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements,” said Hamdallah during a meeting with Christian Berger, the director for the Middle East at the European External Action Service, in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah on Monday.

He urged all EU member countries to recognize the State of Palestine and establish full diplomatic relations with it.

The Palestinian premier also demanded that the 28-nation bloc support the idea of holding an international conference to establish peace in the Middle East.

“Such a conference would breathe new life into the stalled peace process, and ensure the implementation of UN resolutions,” said Hamdallah, adding that, “The final aim of the conference is the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

Moreover, he briefed the EU official on the dire economic situation that Palestinians face in the occupied territories due to Israeli restrictions.

Palestinians have been calling for a ban on Israeli goods, urging people worldwide to unite against Tel Aviv and put an immediate embargo on Israeli products.

A decade ago, a coalition of worldwide organizations established an international campaign, known as the BDS, which advocates boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel.

The movement calls for an economic boycott of Israel to force the regime to end its occupation of the West Bank, which it captured in 1967, and respect the right of return of Palestinian refugees. Thousands of volunteers worldwide have joined the BDS ever since to help promote the Palestinian cause.
