Iran slams deadly bombings in Damascus, Homs

22 Feb 2016 - 13:49

TEHRAN, Feb. 22 (MNA) – Iran has roundly condemned Sunday's bomb attacks in Syria's central city of Homs and near a shrine outside Damascus that left at least 150 people dead.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran condemns all terrorist attacks and announces its most explicit condemnation over yesterday’s bombings [in Syria] as these acts of terror only target innocent civilians,” said Iranian Foreign Minister Spokesperson Hossein Jabari Ansari on Monday.

While conveying his deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the people of Syria, the Iranian diplomat added “naturally, any solution to Syrian crisis must be about a successful fight against terrorist groups and restriction of the areas of their activities.”

Jaberi Ansari dismissed claims by Saudi media over Iran’s part in these acts, saying “Saudi media have taken up on a calculated mission to provoke public opinion, as they had done so in the days leading up to the execution of Sheikh al-Nimr. The background to publishing these allegations is to export the happenings in Saudi Arabia to other countries.”

A triple bombing attack near a shrine in Damascus and Al-Zahraa district of Homs killed at least 83 people and wounded 178 citizens wounded. The bombings, claimed by ISIL terrorists, rocked the sprawling Shia district of Sayyidah Zaynab in the Syrian capital.

Meanwhile, according to Syrian Arab News Agency SANA, Syria’s Foreign and Expatriates Ministry noted on Monday that “the terrorist organizations committing these acts are the real tools of the Saudi and Turkish regimes on the Syrian ground.”

The attacks on Monday, it said, are a Turkish-Saudi response after the two sides’ role in inflaming the crisis in Syria was laid bare.

They are also a new attempt by the Turkish and Saudi regimes specifically to impede the diplomatic efforts seeking a political solution to the crisis, the Ministry added.
