British media are reporting that a delegation comprising SNP politicians were in the Iranian capital Tehran to discuss post-sanctions trade.

The delegation was led by former first minster Alex Salmond during their four-day trip to Tehran. Salmond was joined by MSP Bill Kidd who told the BBC that the trip was "hugely positive".

The six person delegation also included SNP MP Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh and vice-chairman of the Muslim Council for Scotland Azzam Mohammed, added the BBC.

“We met the full range of government ministers and parliamentarians at the highest level, including foreign affairs minister Dr Zarif and speaker of the parliament Dr Ali Larijani," said Salmond.

"The key areas where Scottish expertise can be invaluable to Iran include oil and gas, finance and education. However, we also learned on our trip of outstanding opportunities in transport, communications and agriculture".

The delegation have prepared a full report which will be circulated to Scottish ministers and Scottish Enterprise, added the BBC.

UK’s Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond visited Iran in August in what is seen as a major step by London to promote relations between the two countries.

Several British trade delegations have so far visited the country to look for investment opportunities once the sanctions against Iran are lifted.

In September, UK’s Finance Minister George Osborne told the media that he would lead the country’s biggest-ever trade delegation to Iran next year.

“We can either sit on the sidelines, watch the world move ahead and gradually decline — plenty of other countries are taking that path — or we can get out there and plant our flag in the ground,” the Financial Times quoted Osborne, considered by many as Britain’s second most powerful man, as saying.
