5 Dec 2015 - 17:48

Iraqi security and medical officials say at least ten people have lost their lives and nearly three dozen others sustained injuries in a spate of bomb attacks in and around the capital, Baghdad.

A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said two civilians were killed and nine others injured when a bomb exploded close to a popular café near the Diyala Bridge in southeastern Baghdad on Saturday, the Arabic-language al-Baghdadia satellite television network reported.

A civilian also died when an improvised explosive device attached beneath his car went off in the capital’s western neighborhood of Ghazaliyah.

On Friday, a roadside bomb blew off in the al-Bayaa’ neighborhood of western Baghdad, leaving two police officers dead and another injured.

Separately, a bomb went off near a medical facility in the Nairiyah neighborhood of southern Baghdad, leaving a civilian dead and eight others injured.

Earlier in the day, a civilian lost his life and five others sustained injuries when an improvised explosive device went off near a garage in Baghdad’s southwestern al-Davanim area.

Additionally, a civilian died and five others were injured when a bomb went off in the al-Mahdiyah neighborhood of southern Baghdad.

In the town of Mahmoudiya, situated 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Baghdad, a bomb attack struck a popular market, killing two civilians and injuring seven others.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq says a total of 888 Iraqis were killed and another 1,237 wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in November alone.

According to the UN mission, the number of civilian fatalities stood at 489. Violence also claimed the lives of 399 members of the Iraqi security forces. A great portion of the fatalities was recorded in Baghdad, where 325 civilians were killed.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by violence ever since Takfiri Daesh militants began an offensive in Iraqi territory in June 2014. Army soldiers and Popular Mobilization units have joined forces and are seeking to take back militant-held regions in joint operations.
