Iran’s anti-terror resolve catches eyes: Speaker

23 Oct 2015 - 22:39

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Parliament speaker said the country’s determination to fight off terrorism attracted the participants’ considerable attention in an annual meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club in Russia.

Upon his arrival in Tehran from Sochi on Friday, Ali Larijani said attendees at the meeting regarded Iran as a major country with firm determination to stem terrorism.

The 12th annual meeting of the club, titled "Societies between War and Peace: Overcoming the Logic of Conflict in Tomorrow's World" was held from October 19 to 22 in Russia's southern city of Sochi.

Larijani also noted that there was a consensus among participants in the gathering that battling terrorism requires an international campaign.

The Iranian speaker said he held talks with a number of the foreign experts and officials in the meeting, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He further described Russia as a major country with influential role in the regional and international developments.

Back on Thursday, Larijani and Putin met in Sochi to discuss counter-terrorism efforts, particularly the fight against the terrorist groups in Syria.

Since late September, Russia has been carrying out bombings against the ISIL terrorist group in Syria, after Russia's parliament granted President Putin authorization to deploy the country's air force abroad.

Syria has been entangled in civil war since March 2011. The ISIL Takfiri group now controls parts of the Arab country, mostly in the east.

In the past four and half years, more than 240,000 people have died in Syria -overwhelmingly civilians- and around 4 million Syrian people are now refugees in other countries. Around 8 million others have been displaced internally.
