Additional Protocol to help vindicate Iran: IAEA chief

20 Sep 2015 - 20:55

The head of UN nuclear body says Iran's planned execution of the Additional Protocol to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) will help prove the peaceful nature of the country's nuclear program.

Yukiya Amano, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who was addressing an Iranian parliamentary panel reviewing Tehran's nuclear agreement with the P5+1 group of world countries on Sunday, welcomed Iran's decision to implement the protocol as a positive gesture.

He added that as many as 120 countries in the world are currently implementing the Additional Protocol.

Amano noted that the IAEA will respect the confidentiality of issues related to Iran’s nuclear program, saying the agency has defined a regime for protecting confidential data.

He said that a good opportunity has been created for the resolution of Iran's nuclear issue.

In a meeting earlier in the day, President Hassan Rouhani said Iran will voluntarily accept to implement the NPT in order to dispel doubts about the nature of its nuclear program.

Amano reassured Rouhani that the IAEA will draw up its reports on Iran’s nuclear program impartially and based on realities.

On July 14, Iran and the IAEA signed a road map for “the clarification of past and present issues” regarding Tehran’s nuclear program in the Austrian capital Vienna. The agreement was reached on the same day Iran and the P5+1 - the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany - finalized the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in Vienna.

As part of the road map, the IAEA is required to finish its investigations about Iran’s nuclear activities and submit a report to the agency’s board by December 15.

The IAEA chief arrived in Tehran on Sunday for a day of talks with senior Iranian officials on the implementation of the road map.
