General John Allen's remarks against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad show Washington is desperate to overthrow the government in Damascus, says former CIA contractor Steven Kelley.
In a recent interview with ABC News, Allen, the US envoy for the so-called anti-Daesh coalition, said, “Syria is never going to be solved militarily. Syria has got to be solved at a political level. Syria has got to have a political transition away from Bashar al-Assad.”
“He can’t be part of the solution,” Allen claimed. “What I recommend is that we focus on a political transition that removes Assad and removes the leadership and the manner in which he has led this conflict.”
Kelley said Allen’s statement “shows certain desperation, it shows that this farce of fighting ISIS had nothing to do with the terrorists but only the removal of Assad.”
“Now that the Russians are moving in, certainly this is becoming very critical and obviously their window of opportunity is going away, and certainly Israel is getting very upset,” he told Press TV on Tuesday.
“When [Gen. Allen] claims that this is never going to be solved militarily, that means that the US-ISIS mercenaries can’t do the job,” he noted.
“After hundreds of phony airstrikes designed only to weaken Assad, he [Allen] says we’re not done yet, meaning that they can’t wait to do what they did to Libya,” Kelly added.
Syrian forces under the command of President Assad have restlessly been battling Daesh (ISIL) terrorists on different fronts throughout the war-ravaged country.
The US and its allies have conducted hundreds of airstrikes against the Takfiris in Syria for about a year but to no avail.
Washington has expressed concern over reports of "an imminent enhanced Russian military buildup" in Syria.
