Senior cleric criticizes Al Saud for Mecca deadly incident

27 Oct 2015 - 15:21

Tehran, September 12, The Iran Project - Senior cleric Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi says the martyrdom of Hajj pilgrims at the Grand Mosque of Mecca shows Al Saud’s negligence and imprudence.

Expressed regret over the deadly crane incident in Mecca, Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi said on Saturday that construction of high towers around the Grand Mosque must be stopped.

Grand Ayatollah blamed Al Saud for its mismanagement and negligence, and stated Saudi officials claimed that strong sandstorm, winds and torrential rains had brought the crane down, but why should they use the crane when hundreds of thousands of Muslim pilgrims are performing the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

He also urged Muslim scholars to advise Saudi Arabian officials to change the way they manage the Grand Mosque of Mecca.

A towering construction crane toppled over on Friday during a violent rainstorm in the Saudi city of Mecca, crashing into the Grand Mosque and killing at least 107 people, including an Iranian citizen.

Reports added that the incident injured 238 people, including 25 Iranians.
