TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived in the Syrian capital of Damascus on Wednesday to hold talks with the Arab country’s officials on various bilateral and regional issues.
Upon his arrival at the Damascus international airport, Zarif was welcomed by Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad and the Iranian ambassador to Damascus.
According to reports, Zarif, who made the trip to Syria as part of his new tour of regional countries, will likely discuss Iran’s recently updated four-article plan for Syria.
Last year, Iran proposed a four-article plan for finding a political solution to the ongoing crisis in Syria, which was welcomed by the UN. Iranian officials say that plan is now being updated.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011. In the past four years, more than 200,000 people have died in Syria - overwhelmingly civilians - and around 4 million Syrian people are now refugees in other countries. Another 7.6 million are displaced inside Syria.
