TEHRAN (ISNA)- The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) is evaluating the performance of Iran’s nuclear power plant in Bushehr.

According to the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), 25 WANO experts have been conducting the evaluation based on a peer review since June 1 in 12 fields and in comparison with the highest international standards in the nuclear industry.

The UK-based non-profit association is also commissioned to offer recommendations for the improvement of the plant’s safety and efficiency.

The peer review, which is being carried out within the framework of cooperation between the Nuclear Power Production and Development (NPPD) Company of IRAN and WANO, will continue until June 18.

This is WANO’s second peer review of Bushehr power plant with the first one being conducted in 2011 and the follow-up session held in 2013.

Peer reviewing is one of WANO’s most significant services as it helps “members compare themselves against standards of excellence through an in-depth, objective review of their operations by an independent team from outside their organization,” the association said on its website.

Peer reviews of operational nuclear plants are conducted every four years at the request of WANO member states with a follow-up session at the two-year point.

Reports say that 31 countries with operational nuclear plants subscribe to the association, which has four regional centers in Paris, Atlanta, Tokyo, and Moscow. Iran’s NPPD is a member of WANO in Moscow.
