Iran in talks to export liquefied gas to Spain

26 May 2015 - 15:18

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, IGCC Managing Director Mohammad Ali Barati said one of the objectives of the company is to export liquefied gas to European countries but now Iran's exports are limited due to sanctions.

"After the (removal of) sanctions, relations with European countries will be expanded" he said, adding, "Naturally, in that case we will have new customers from the continent.

"Currently, we have no exports to the European Union but we are holding indirect talks to export gas to Spain," Barati stated.

Known as the world's top gas reserves holder with an estimated 33.6 trillion cubic meters, Iran is an attractive alternative supplier for Europeans seeking  to improve their resilience to gas supply disruptions.

Russia is now the biggest supplier of gas to Europe, with about a third of Europe's current gas requirements covered by Russian gas.

Back in April, Iran's ambassador to Turkey said Tehran was working out details of a project to export its natural gas to Europe through Turkey.
