Berlin, May 20, IRNA -- German foreign ministry spokesman Martin Schaefer said in Berlin on Wednesday it was 'too early' to speculate on a likely extension of nuclear talks between Iran and six world powers, according to IRNA.
Reacting to Iran's general readiness to extend the nuclear negotiations beyond the June 30 deadline, Schaefer reiterated his country remained committed to the initially agreed target date.
We still have six weeks left to work out the details of a text for a final agreement and to already give up on the June 30 date now, does 'not seem to be a reasonable approach,' he said.
We and our E3 plus 3 partners (the US, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany) will do our utmost to seal a deal by the end of June, Schaefer added.
Asked by IRNA whether Berlin would be generally willing to prolong the talks, Schaefer replied it was 'way too early' now to make a proper assessment on such a scenario.
A proper decision can be made shortly before June 30 when we take stock of the negotiation process, he said.
It's not the objective of the German government to exceed the deadline again.
Our goal should be to reach a final comprehensive agreement by June 30, he added.
Iran and E3 plus 3 are currently engaged in intense negotiations in Vienna to hammer out a comprehensive accord geared at ending the longstanding dispute over Tehran's nuclear program.
Both sides reached a landmark framework agreement on the Iranian nuclear program on April 2 in the Swiss city of Lausanne.
