Majlis trusts in negotiating team: Vice speaker

10 May 2015 - 16:32

Tehran, May 10, IRNA – Majlis Vice-Speaker Mohamamd Reza Bahonar said Iranian parliament has all confidence in the negotiating team but this trust does not negate monitoring, surveillence and care.

Speaking in a televised interview, Bahonar pointed to the Iranian fact sheet on nuclear talks and said members of the team verbally discuss the topics in the Majlis and in the nationwide media and say this is the fact sheet. “Our fact sheet and that of the other side brings no undertaking for the two sides and the point that how much it is in the interest or necessary to be published in the press is under evaluation.”

As for ambiguity with regard to some of the details, Bahonar said he believed government officials and those in the Foreign Ministry and the negotiating team should have further elaborated on the issue. However, “the National Security Commission of the Majlis is fully aware of the details of the talks and there is no point that Majlis speaker is unaware of. The negotiating team has given full explanations of the issue in the closed sessions of the Majlis.”

He said in the month of Esfand (February/March) a motion was approved in the Majlis according to which if the other side and even the Iranian side wanted to reach a point beyond agreements of the system, the Majlis might oblige the government to return to the situation prior to the Geneva agreement.

“However, we are not after retaliation and will not take emotional decisions and will act prudently.”

He further remarked that continuation of the talks under the shadow of threat is not called negotiations. “If they are to threaten us with military issues, then we will not dispatch our diplomatic commanders to the scene and we will use others and our other facilities but we are not supposed to make emotional decisions.”

As for the approval of the additional protocol in the Majlis, he said currently we are a member of the Agency (International Atomic Energy) and have accepted the protocol, adding that for joining the additional protocol a Majlis approval is needed and there is no legal doubt about it and 5+1 is aware of it.

However, the government can voluntarily and temporarily accept the additional protocol but there is a problem with it as the Majlis last year approved that the government is not authorized to accept the additional protocol voluntarily.

Stressing that the main point is interaction, he said in strategic issues there is no difference between the government and the Majlis and the both are after observing the red line.
