The Iranian ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called on countries to halt nuclear cooperation with non-signatories to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), especially Israel.

Reza Najafi made the remarks during a meeting of the 2015 NPT Review Conference at the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

Najafi, who was reading out a statement on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), also underlined the right for all NPT members to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Iran currently holds NAM's rotating presidency.

The Iranian envoy also called on NPT signatories to fulfill their commitments to help other members use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes without any discrimination.

Article four of the NPT underlines the inalienable right of all parties to the Treaty to develop, research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful ends without discrimination.

It also calls on all signitories to facilitate the fullest possible exchange of equipment, materials and scientific and technological information for the peaceful application of nuclear energy.

Najafi stressed that countries need to refrain from nuclear cooperation with non-members of the NPT unless they join the treaty.

Israel is widely believed to be the only possessor of nuclear weapons in the Middle East. The Tel Aviv regime, which rejects all regulatory international nuclear agreements, particularly the NPT, maintains a policy of deliberate ambiguity over its nuclear activities and refuses to allow its nuclear facilities to come under international regulatory inspections.
