Tehran, March 30, IRNA – Republican Sen. Richard Burr has said the US should extend the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 over Tehran’s nuclear program.

The talks between Iran and P5+1 – the US, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany – have reached the last stage ahead of the self-imposed deadline of March 31 for reaching a mutual understanding over the outstanding issues. The two sides have set July 1 as the deadline for a final agreement.


Burr, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Sunday on CBS's 'Face the Nation' that he thinks 'now is the time to push back from the table, and ask ourselves, is it really time to trust the people that we're negotiating with, the Iranians?'

'I would encourage the administration, let's take more time. Let's not hasten to a deal,' he stated.

He also put into question the direction the negotiations are taking saying it does not seem that talks are “headed in the right direction'.

Burr said he is dubious that Secretary of State John Kerry “believes that he's got to get a deal by Tuesday'.

Republican lawmakers in the US Congress have been attempting to hamper the Obama administration’s efforts to reach an agreement with Iran, with some pushing a new round of economic sanctions against Tehran.

They are scared that peace might break out between Iran and the United States, challenging those groups that have a vested interest in escalating tensions against the Islamic Republic, American political commentator and antiwar activist Brian Becker told Press TV on Friday.
