A member of Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) says the board that oversees the lawmakers has received a formal complaint against MP Ali Motahari over his remarks criticizing the long-term house arrest of two opposition leaders.
The board received the formal complaint by 50 lawmakers against Motahari after his speech briefly suspended a Parliament session, Evaz Heidarpour said on Saturday.

Speaking in an open session of Parliament on January 11, Motahari said the continuation of the house arrest of Mir Hossein Mousavi and his wife Zahra Rahnavard as well as Mahdi Karroubi without a judicial verdict is a violation of the Constitution. He warned that the move would be detrimental to the Islamic Revolution.

Several lawmakers then walked to the podium shouting and chanting slogans against those behind the post-election unrest in Iran back in 2009, and prevented Motahari from continuing his speech.

Vice Speaker Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabi-Fard publicly criticized Motahari for his comments and adjourned the session. However, it was resumed after 25 minutes.

Aboutorabi-Fard said the continuation of Motahari’s speech would not serve the country's interests.

Mousavi, Rahnavard and Karroubi have been held under house arrest since 2011 on charges of provoking people and harming national security by spreading the idea that the 2009 presidential election was rigged.

Presidential contenders Karroubi and Musavi lost in the election.

Motahari and a number of other lawmakers have called on the Judiciary to either release the opposition leaders or put them on trial.

Iranian judicial officials have repeatedly vowed to take legal action against Mousavi and Karroubi, but they have taken no action yet.
