12 Jan 2015 - 22:32

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Deputy head of the Iranian Judiciary’s Human Rights Council praised the country’s legislative structure and its performance on human rights issues, saying that Iran is among world’s top countries on the protection of the rights.

“Most advanced laws for the protection of human rights are enforced in Iran,” Kazem Gharibabadi said, “ According to Iran’s Constitution, various bodies have been established, including Judiciary’s Human Rights Council and different commissions at the parliament (to protect human rights).”

He made the remarks in a ceremony held at Tehran University on Monday, during which the 2014 edition of the report on human rights violations in the United States was released.

“Iran is placed in a privileged position in the world in terms of its structure for the protection of human rights,” the official noted.

He also commented on the importance of freedom of speech in Iran, and said the existence of over 6,000 publications and more than 120 news agencies as well as news websites in the country is indicative of the fact that the Islamic Republic attaches great significance to the issue of freedom of expression.

Gharibabadi went on to say that holding elections in Iran indicates “the position of judicial justice” in the country.

He also pointed to the independence of judicial bodies in Iran and said in many countries, judges and officials at supreme courts are appointed by their presidents, while the judiciary in Iran acts as an independent body.

In spite of the human right situation in Iran, Western countries criticize Tehran and support some regional states, which even do not hold any free elections in their countries, he noted.
