Russia has warned that the United Nations Security Council’s failure to approve a draft resolution demanding the recognition of an independent Palestinian state could plunge the Middle East into insecurity and violence.
“The inaction of the Security Council in this area dooms the situation to a dangerous status quo which we cannot accept. One chance for hope is not enough. We must continue,” Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin said.
The Russian diplomat expressed regret over the UN’s rejection of the resolution, describing it as a “strategic mistake.”
Churkin also said Israel’s illegal settlements in the occupied territories and the lack of international solidarity would undermine the chances for fulfilling the concept of a Palestinian state.
The Russian diplomat’s remarks came after the UNSC rejected a draft resolution demanding the recognition of an independent Palestinian state and the termination of the Israeli occupation.
The resolution needed to secure at least nine votes to be passed by the 15-member body. Eight voted in favor, including France, Russia and China, and two against while there were five abstentions, among them the UK. The US and Australia voted against the resolution.
Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, slammed the UNSC rejection of the resolution as “regrettable.”
