Tehran, Dec 16, IRNA - Expediency Council Chairman Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani urged Iranian politicians to practice moderation against extremism.
Speaking to a gathering of moderate political parties, he urged the international community and in the meantime, domestic political parties to prevent spread of extremism at both national and international levels.
Extremism damages the moderate and peaceful nature of Islam and can be used as a tool to provoke Islamophobia, the senior cleric added.
He underlined that people in Afghanistan, Libya and Egypt tried to overthrow their totalitarian regimes but now sectarianism, violence and extremism have engulfed them.
Iran has always urged the regional states to practice moderation. The first conference on War Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) was held in Tehran on December 9-10, a year after the UN General Assembly adopted President Hassan Rouhani's proposal calling for the 'World Against Violence and Extremism'.
