Iran to host 2016 Silk Road Forum

18 Nov 2014 - 14:12

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian city of Qazvin has been selected as the host of Silk Road Forum for 2016, the city's Mayor Massoud Nosrati announced.
Nosrati announced that the Silk Road Forum will take place in Qazvin Business Tower Complex on August 30, 2016, MNA reported.

The Silk Road Mayor Forum is organized by World Citizens Organization (WCO), and all its main representatives are from countries on the Silk Road.

“This forum aims at improving tourism, as well as cultural, economic and social affairs in these cities, and this is achieved by organizing exchanges among government officials, business organizations and non-governmental associations in countries all around the world,” said Nosrati.

Since 2006, 8 forums have been held in Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Lanzhou (China), and Almaty (Kazakhstan), and all had an active role in communication and cooperation among countries and regions around the Silk Road.

In Urumqi, China meeting on Sep. 2014, Qazvin was elected as the host of Silk Road Forum for 2016. The Forum focuses on protecting the Silk Road and strengthening of its economic belt, and aims at bringing about unity and mutual trust, equality and mutual benefits, and win-win cooperation among the member countries.

The UN regional Silk Road programs were especially active in the field of investment facilitation and development of tourism, focusing attention on China and the core countries of Central Asia. Among others, new important regional traditions were established that are still being continued under WCO – UN cooperation, including the Silk Road Investment Forum and the Silk Road Mayors’ Forum, the 5th edition of which was held in Iran's Shiraz in 2010.

The scope of Silk Road activities have expanded beyond the old core body of UN projects and is now embracing countries such as Iran, Republic of Korea, Japan, Russia, Mongolia or Afghanistan.
