Iranian-British woman detained over anti-Iran activities: Official

11 Nov 2014 - 18:59

A senior Iranian judiciary official says British-Iranian woman Ghoncheh Ghavami has been detained in Iran because of spreading propaganda against the Islamic Republic and interactions with elements opposed to the Islamic Republic.
Iranian Judiciary Deputy for Cultural Affairs Hadi Sadeghi said 25-year-old Ghavami has not been detained for trying to watch a men’s sports event at a stadium, but rather because of her anti-Iran propaganda activities and interactions with counter-revolutionary elements.

The Iranian judiciary official made the remarks while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 20th International Exhibition of the Press, News Agencies and Information Websites in Tehran on Tuesday.

On September 22, Iranian Judiciary Spokesman Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i also dismissed foreign reports that Ghavami has been arrested while attempting to enter a stadium in the Iranian capital.

“Although this individual has been arrested at a spot where sports were being played, her case is not related to the issue of sports,” Mohseni-Eje’i said back then.

Women in Iran are not allowed to watch men’s sports games at stadiums, according to the law.

Last week, FIVB announced that Iran would not be able to organize the under-19 world championship in 2015, over the detention of Ghavami as well as the ban on the participation of women in men’s sports games.

President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Volleyball Federation Mohammad Reza Davarzani has said Ghavami’s case is not related to volleyball and “to make a connection between a non-sporting activity and our sport is unfair.”
