What Does Ahmadinejad Do in Latin America?

10 Jan 2012 - 22:16

There are different propositions regarding Ahmadinejad’s four-nation tour of Latin America.

Before Ahmadinejad’s tour to Latin American countries, US and other western countries claimed that the tour was a sign of desperation as sanctions increasingly isolate his country. They also asserted that Iran is flailing for new friends as the sanctions bite.

On the second day of Ahmadinejad’s five-day tour, Western and Iranian news agencies speculate in different ways about what does he actually do in Latin America?

AP reported that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants to defend his country's nuclear program. According to Diego Moya-Ocampos, he is also likely to look for ways to use his Latin American alliances to diminish the impact of sanctions on Iran's oil industry.

According to Xinhua, the Iranian president tends to discuss bilateral cooperation in areas of agriculture, industry, commerce, and energy, and will renew some cooperation agreements.

But Press TV, Iranian state news, and Fars news agency, Iran’s semi-official media just refer to further expansion of ties between Iran and Latin American countries as Ahmadinejad’s only intension of this trip. The Venezuelan president, for his part, reiterated that the two allies can take steps toward the fight against hegemonic policies through bolstering mutual relations. And following that US warned Latin American states against a further expansion of diplomatic and business ties with Iran, the two presidents also called on the imperialist and extremist powers to stop interfering in the internal affairs of other countries and cautioned independent governments and nations to remain vigilant against plots hatched by the hegemonic powers.

However, it can be said that the obvious and hidden dimensions of this tour worry US and other western countries.
