According to recent reports, water has leaked under the foundation of Iran’s Azadi Tower, one of the oldest monuments in the country’s capital which marks the entrance to Tehran.
The Azadi Tower was built in 1971 in commemoration of the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire and named Shahyad (Kings' Memorial) Tower. But its name was changed to Azadi (freedom) after the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

According to the Public Relations office of the Azadi Tower, the water leakage is caused by not insulating the foundation of the tower properly during the reconstruction program in 2006 and is now threatening the symbolic monument.

The tower’s management has reportedly notified concerned bodies, such as Tehran’s municipality, Cultural Commission of Iran’s Majlis and Tehran’s City Council, of the problem. However, no measure has been taken so far to address the problem.

The Azadi Tower has been somewhat ignored after the construction of Milad Tower which is the fifth tallest telecommunication tower in the world.
