Current regional violence could have been averted with Iranian president’s proposal

30 Oct 2014 - 22:18

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian judiciary official said if President Rouhani’s proposal against violence and extremism had been taken seriously, the current crisis in the region could be avoided.
The region would not be witnessing the current level of violence had the Iranian president’s proposal for a World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) been taken seriously, said Chief of the Iranian Judiciary’s Human Rights Council Mohammad Javad Larijani who is in Geneva.

He said the WAVE proposal was adopted at the UN with support from all countries, including members of the Non-aligned Movement (NAM), “but, unfortunately, it did not receive as much attention as it should have.”

On September 24, 2013, Rouhani called for a World Against Violence and Extremism during his speech at the 68th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

“We should accept and be able to open a new horizon in which peace will prevail over war, tolerance over violence, progress over bloodletting, justice over discrimination, prosperity over poverty, and freedom over despotism,” Rouhani said.

On December 18 that year, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly voted to approve the Iranian president’s WAVE proposal.

Larijani further warned that the new generation of terrorists operating in the region are fully trained and equipped and pose a threat not only to the region but to the whole world.

He added that these terrorists act in the name of Islam whereas all Muslims, Shia or Sunni, are against them.

Takfiri terrorist groups, especially the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), have been committing heinous crimes in countries like Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.

The ISIL is a militant group in Iraq and Syria believed to be supported by the West and some regional Arab countries.

The terrorist group claims as an independent state the territory of Iraq and Syria, with implied future claims intended over more of the Levant, including Lebanon, occupied Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey.
