Afkham: Cameron’s UN remarks unacceptable

8 Oct 2014 - 13:35

TEHRAN, Oct. 08 (MNA) – Iran’s FM spokeswoman has said Cameron’s remarks in his UN address about Iran would affect incipient détente.

Marzieh Afkham responded to a Mehr News question on Iran’s and British embassies reopening in capitals following the Rouhani-Cameron meeting on the sidelines of UN General Assembly in New York. “The process of reopening embassies is followed routinely and we are in no hurry to accelerate the reopening process,” Afkham told Mehr News. “Mr. Cameron’s remarks about Iran on his UN address were unacceptable and far from diplomatic conventions, which would have its harmful impacts on the incipient détente between two countries,” she added.

“The meeting between Rouhani and Cameron was commissioned by a request from the British side, and negotiation would not necessarily mean to roundly accept the other side’s positions,” Afkham said, and that “the remarks were unconstructive with relevant harmful effects.”

On a question about Zarif’s visit to Riyadh after his New York visit with Saudi officials, Afkham said that Deputy-FM Amir-Abdollahian's visit to Riyadh paved the grounds for the New York meeting with Saudis, where they discussed wide spectrum of the issues. "Direct talks and visits are on the agenda and we hope we can shedule a visit to Riyadh in Mr. Zarif's agenda."
