Mehdi Chamran, a conservative member of Tehran City Council, has received the necessary votes to take the helm of the capital’s top administrative body.
ISNA reports that Chamran managed to defeat Ahmad Masjed Jamei, a councillor with more reformist inclinations, by a vote of 18 to 13.
Chamran is a veteran councillor and has served two terms as the head of Tehran Council.
He was one of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s staunchest supporters during Ahmadinejad’s term as Tehran mayor and during the first term of his presidency. Some have even referred to Chamran as the coordinator of Ahmadinejad’s presidency.
Ahmad Masjed Jamei, the councillor who lost to Chamran today, led the council for the past year. R
