TEHRAN (Tasnim) - President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz praised Iran for its contribution to the settlement of conflicts in the Middle East region.
“Iran has so far played a constructive role in resolving the regional crises and issues,” Schulz said in a Monday meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in the Belgian capital of Brussels.
The German president of the European Parliament also expressed his organization’s concern about the growing threat of terrorism and the joining of nationals from several Western countries to the terrorist groups.
The top Iranian diplomat, for his part, raised the alarm over the terrorist activities in Iraq and Syria and the spillover of the crisis into other parts of the region and the world.
Foreign Minister Zarif further emphasized the necessity for an “end to the all-out supports” for the terrorist groups and “partnership and responsibility by all countries” to eradicate terrorism.
With the Syrian conflict entering its fourth year, governments across Europe are growing increasingly concerned about the number of their nationals heading to Syria to fight alongside terrorists.
In April, the Netherlands warned that militants returning from Syria pose a security threat to Europe and said two Dutch citizens had carried out suicide attacks in Syria and Iraq in the past six months and about 100 others had fought in Syria in 2013.
And on August 29, Britain raised its terrorism alert to the second-highest level with Prime Minister David Cameron saying the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group posed the country's greatest ever security risk.
The ISIL is a militant group in Iraq and Syria believed to be supported by the West and some regional and Arab countries. The terrorist group claims as an independent state the territory of Iraq and Syria, with implied future claims intended over more of the Levant, including Lebanon, occupied Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey.
