Iranian MPs back gender segregation

24 Jul 2014 - 16:23

Tehran, July 24, IRNA - Over 180 lawmakers have supported a plan by Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf to segregate female and male employees in Tehran Municipality.
MP Zargham Sadeqi said on Wednesday 183 MPs signed a letter supporting the move.

They said the measure is in line with “respecting working women” in the municipality.

The mayor of Tehran has defended his move to segregate male and female workers in city offices, saying he made the decision because “we have an Islamic system and religious dignity.”

Qalibaf said that the five female-only parks created in Tehran had been welcomed by women.
