Iran’s volleyball team has failed to reach the FIVB World League’s final match after being defeated by the American team in three straight sets.
On Saturday, Iran lost its first ever semifinal match at a world tournament to the US team 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-16).
The United States is three-time Olympic champion and won a gold medal at the 2008 World League in Rio de Janeiro. The Americans also bagged the silver medal of the 2012 World League held in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Iran made its way to the tournament’s semifinals after putting in a remarkable performance in its final round matches against Brazil and Russia in the Italian city of Florence.
Iran was grouped with nine-time world champion Brazil and 2012 Olympic champion Russia in the final round of the tournament. In its opener, Iran lost 3-2 to Russia, but topped the pool after winning Brazil 3-1.
Brazil went through to the semifinals in second place, following its 3-1 victory over Russia, and the Russian team was eliminated from the tournament.
Brazil will take on eight-time world champion Italy later on Saturday. The loser of the match will compete against Iran for the bronze medal on Sunday.
