Tehran, June 29, IRNA - Researchers at the Iranian Orthopedic Association will use stem cells to regenerate cartilage to treat broken as well as cancerous bones, said the head of the association.
Conducted in collaboration with researchers of Royan Institute, Gholamali Akkasheh added that bone tumors often occur in long bones such as thigh and leg bones, and flat bones such as pelvis. The cartilages are grown using stem cells taken from the patients.
Cartilage helps distribute the force of movements in joints and allows bones to move smoothly.
But unlike other types of tissue, it lacks its own blood supply, so cannot repair itself when damaged through osteoarthritis, in accidents, or by cancer.
Patients relied on cartilage transplants or the extraction and reinjection of their own cartilage cells back into their knees or hips.
A normal cartilage repair might only last a couple of years.
