Iran, P5+1 to begin 14-day talks next week: Russia

26 Jun 2014 - 13:00

As the deadline for an interim nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 draws closer, Russia says the two sides are set to resume intense and lengthy talks next week.
On Wednesday, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin described as “very useful” the previous round of talks between Iran and the six powers – the United States, France, Britain, Russia, China and Germany – which was held in the Austrian capital of Vienna from June 16 to 20.
The Russian ambassador said the negotiations “confirmed the overall readiness to continue cooperating in a constructive vein."
He added that the next round of talks are slated to continue for two weeks from July 2 to July 15 in Vienna.

Other senior officials who are involved in the talks have reportedly confirmed that the next phase of talks will last two weeks.

Iran and the six powers have been discussing ways to iron out differences to achieve a final deal that would end the decade-old dispute over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

The two sides inked an interim accord in Geneva, Switzerland, on November 23, 2013. The six-month deal expires on July 20.

On June 18, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the two sides had started drafting a final deal despite the remaining “fundamental” differences, adding that if Iran's opposite side shows political will, a comprehensive accord could be reached.
