The women arrested on June 21 for trying to enter Tehran’s Azadi Stadium to watch the volleyball match between Iran and Italy have been released, according to a presidential aide.
Shahla Molaverdi, who advises President Rohani on women’s affairs, announced that the women were released through the efforts of the president’s office. She reported that as soon as her office was informed of the arrests, it began efforts to secure their release by order of the president.
Molaverdi added that the administration is now trying to establish a mechanism to address the root of the problem and make sure women will be able to enter stadiums unimpeded.
