Most Americans oppose US policies towards Iran: Analyst

13 Feb 2014 - 14:16

The majority of Americans oppose US government policies towards Iran, a political commentator in New York says, urging the people of Iran to resist increasing US antagonism against their country.

“The US is not going just to walk away and allow Iran to be sovereign and independent and most people in Iran know that and have been standing up for 35 years now, already, and they’ll have to continue to do so,” said Don DeBar, and anti-war activist and radio host in New York.

“I just hope that they (Iranians) realize there are people here in the United States who are in solidarity with them and the majority of the people in the United States oppose that kind of policy,” DeBar told Press TV on Wednesday.

“After the Iranian Revolution, there are large sectors of the political class in the United States that can’t get over that 35 years ago Iran spun out of the Western imperial orbit and has been exercising sovereignty over itself,” he added.

Since 1979, the United States has imposed rounds of unilateral economic sanctions against Iran. But recently, the sanctions have been strengthened over a nuclear dispute between Washington and Tehran.

In November, the US and Europe offered Tehran modest sanctions relief in return for Iran taking steps to limit its uranium enrichment activities. The deal called for negotiation of a full agreement within a year.

Many members of US Congress and Israel have denounced the agreement, arguing that the easing of sanctions disproportionately favored Iran.
