The European Union’s imposition of fresh sanctions on Iran contravenes the nuclear deal Iran signed with world powers in Geneva in November, an analyst says.
“It completely violates the spirit of the agreement - I would say also the letter of the agreement,” Brian Becker told Press TV in an interview on Wednesday.

He said Iran’s government and nation have to “be very mistrustful about what’s actually going on because instead of actually moving towards an accommodation, showing good faith in negotiations, the United States is using lots of sticks not just carrots - the United States and Europe - in order to impose their will on Iran.”

Becker said the Western governments do not intend to “really” ease sanctions against Iran.
“They are promising a modest relief in sanctions eventually in exchange for Iran allowing to become the most heavily inspected country in the world,” said Becker.
Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - Britain, China, France, Russia and the US - plus Germany sealed an interim deal on November 24 to pave the way for the full resolution of the West’s decade-old dispute with Iran over the country’s nuclear energy program.

In exchange for Iran’s confidence-building bid to limit certain aspects of its nuclear energy activities, Western countries agreed to lift some of the existing sanctions against Iran and impose no new sanctions against the country.

But the EU has imposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), banning Iranian vessels from using its ports and shipping lines despite the Geneva accord.

“At the very moment and after the interim agreement was signed, after the spirit of the interim agreement was supposed to be that there would be no new sanctions, the EU … carries out new sanctions with the [Iranian] shipping…nothing like it in history,” Becker said.
