Israel unlikely to let go of nuclear arms: Analyst

23 May 2015 - 14:24

Press TV has conducted an interview with Nader Bagherzadeh, a political commentator from Irvine, to ask for his insight on the failure the NPT Review conference after the US blocked a final resolution aimed at establishing a nuclear-free Middle East.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: Can you please give us your take on what you feel about Israel proposed to join now with the NPT, but also opposed to have a nuclear-free Middle East?

Bagherzadeh: So I searched the web, because I recall in 2009 and 2010 this issue came up by the Obama administration and General Jones who was the national security advisor to Mr. Obama. The same problem was identified, meaning this meeting or this committee would be singling out Israel, so they decided against it. It’s the same problem. It will not be used to single out Israel. So, I don’t see this ever happening. This is probably a futile attempt by the Egyptians over and over, every five years.

Press TV: Right now is that the only pretext that the US is opposing this treaty on the Israeli factor or other factors that the US is taking any consideration when opposing a nuclear-free Middle East?

Bagherzadeh: I can’t think of anything else. It would be a win-win for everybody. It would prove to the world that Iran is not interested in weapons and it would put Israel’s weapons basically up for discussion and perhaps finding a way to deal with them. But my feeling is that this is like déjà vu all over again. Every five years, this will come up, nothing will happen. It would be very very unlikely for Israel to let go of its weapons. I don’t see this happening any time soon. And the narrative will change because the narrative right now is Iran is the one who is after the bomb and so on, and the narrative will be going right towards Israel where it should be because they are the only one who has the bomb. So, they don’t want to change the narrative.
