Pres. Raisi discusses bilateral ties, Afghanistan with Xi, Putin

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi held separate phone conversations with his Russian and Chinese counterparts on Wednesday.

Speaking to Russian President Putin, Raeisi emphasised that we are determined to promote friendly and comprehensive relations between the two countries in a way that will become a successful model for neighbourly relations. “We have a serious will to finalise the comprehensive document of Iran-Russia cooperation as soon as possible”.

Raisi thanked Moscow for its initiative to launch the process of Iran’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and described it as a step towards strengthening very close relations between the two countries.

The President thanked Russia for its cooperation in preventing the outbreak of coronavirus and for the effort to jointly produce the COVID-19 vaccine, stating, “Iran is requesting to receive more shipments of the COVID-19 vaccine due to the current special circumstances”.

In another part of the phone call, Ayatollah Raisi noted, “As a party to international treaties such as the NPT, the Islamic Republic of Iran is serious about enforcing the rights of its people in the field of peaceful nuclear activities and enjoying the benefits and achievements of this technology in all peaceful fields”.

The president said, “The United States intends to use its political and media games to stand as a plaintiff instead of a criminal, and instead of being accountable for violating its promises and oppressive and illegal actions, put Iran in that position”.

Referring to the developments in Afghanistan, Ayatollah Raisi said, “The establishment of security and peace in Afghanistan has always been emphasised by the Islamic Republic and we believe that all active Afghan groups should work together to establish stability in the country as soon as possible, and turn the US withdrawal a turning point for lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan”.

Expressing readiness for any cooperation for the establishment of peace and security in Afghanistan, Raisi said, “The successful experience of Iran-Russia cooperation in the fight against takfiri terrorism in Syria has opened new windows for the two sides to increase Tehran-Moscow interaction”.

The Russian President Vladimir Putin said in this phone call that the development of relations with Iran is of great importance to Russia, adding, “The remarks of Iran’s Supreme Leader, who said that the high level of mutual trust and high economic capacity in the two countries can lead to tangible results in the bilateral fields, is well etched in my memory”.

The Russian President added, “Through the Speaker of the Russian Duma, who met with Your Excellency on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony, I was informed of the offer to conclude a comprehensive agreement on bilateral cooperation, and I welcome and support this positive initiative”.

In another part, referring to the ongoing process of delivering the corona vaccine to Iran, Putin stated, “The delivery of the corona vaccine to Iran will accelerate from September”.

Referring to the Vienna talks, the Russian president also stated, “The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) could not be held hostage to problems not related to the nuclear deal.

At the end, the two presidents expressed hope that they would meet on the sidelines of the Shanghai Pact in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, and discuss more detailed issues of interest.

Participation of all Afghan groups necessary for Afghanistan’s security, development: Raeisi tells Xi

Speaking to his Chinese counterpart Xin Xinping, Raeisi hailed China’s stance against unilateralism and appreciated China’s support for Iran in international arenas including the JCPOA and Iran’s joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Expressing appreciation to China for providing Coronavirus vaccines to Iran, Raeisi hoped that the delivery of the purchased vaccine would be facilitated.

Politicizing the source of COVID-19 pandemic is a serious threat to global health and is an example of some countries’ efforts to isolate China, Raeisi said.

Elsewhere, Raeisi said Iran has fulfilled commitments to its obligations, noting, “America should show in practice that it is adhering to its commitments and this requires abandoning all commitment violations, lifting all sanctions, and promptly implementing 100% of all its commitments.”

Tehran is ready to help Beijing for establishing peace and stability in Afghanistan, he said, adding, “We believe that withdrawal of foreigners and also past experiences of this country have made it clear that participation of all Afghan groups is necessary for guaranteeing Afghanistan’s development and security.”

For his part, President Xi said no matter how the global situation changes, China’s willingness to develop relations with Iran will not change.

China-Iran relations have withstood the test of changes in the international situation since their establishment 50 years ago, President Xi said, adding that friendship between the two peoples has also withstood the test of time, according to CGTN.

In a time of unprecedented global changes and a once-in-a-century COVID-19 pandemic, China and Iran have shared weal and woe and helped each other, Xi pointed out.

He added the two sides have strengthened solidarity and cooperation and made positive progress in practical cooperation while fighting the pandemic together, which has effectively consolidated mutual trust and firmly safeguarded international justice and equity.

“China appreciated that Iran attached importance to developing relations with China,” said Xi. He also voiced China’s willingness to work with Iran to carry forward the China-Iran comprehensive strategic partnership for steady and sustained progress.

President Xi called on the two sides to continue to support each other on issues concerning their respective core interests and major concerns.

China, Xi said, firmly supports Iran in defending its national sovereignty and dignity, and opposing foreign intervention.

China is willing to strengthen the exchange of governance experience with Iran and enhance cooperation in combating the pandemic, he added.

Noting that the China-Iran comprehensive cooperation plan opens up broader prospects for bilateral cooperation, Xi urged the two sides to dig deeper into the potential, jointly build the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and create more practical cooperation achievements.

China supports Iran’s reasonable demands concerning the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear issue, and is willing to enhance coordination and cooperation with the Iranian side on regional affairs to safeguard common interests and promote regional security and stability, Xi stressed.
