FM Zarif sees chance for US to rejoin JCPOA

Irans Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the US still has the opportunity to honor the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and pave the way for its return to the 2015 nuclear deal, from which the outgoing US president withdrew in 2018.

The US is still a UN member. If it meets its obligations as such under UNSCR 2231, we will fulfill ours under the JCPOA, Zarif said in a tweet on Wednesday.

If the US then seeks to re-join the JCPOA, we're ready to negotiate terms for it to regain its JCPOA Participant status, he added.

In remarks earlier this month, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said the road for the administration of US President-elect Joe Biden to return to the JCPOA is not closed, although there are challenges.

The US return to the JCPOA has regulations and conditions, the Iranian diplomat added, stressing that negotiations must be held beforehand.

Iran waits to see whether the Zionists and other lobbies would allow the next US administration to shift its policies, and what stances the Biden administration would adopt before making any decision and considering a US request for rejoining the JCPOA, Araqchi noted.
