Speaker: Trump decision on Golan threatening Lebanon

IRNA – Speaker of the parliament of Lebanon Nabih Berri said US President’s choice for Golan Heights is threatening Lebanon and solving regional issues.

“Pertaining to the US decision to consider the Golan Israeli, and the reactions to it, Liberation and Development MPs said such a decision is a threat to Lebanon and a violation to international laws,” the Lebanese media ‘NNA’ quoted Berri as saying.

Stressing the fact that the current situation is the result of some Arab countries’ acts, Berri said Trump’s choice will remove justly solution to regional issues and escalate tensions.

Referring to the fact that Golan Heights belong to Syria, he underlined that Trump’s decision is rejected and is regarded as a political bribe to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the occasion of elections.

Early legislative elections will be held in Israel on April 9 to elect the members of the twenty-first Knesset.

Trump tweeted on Thursday that after 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

Earlier, The Lebanese Foreign Ministry in a statement condemned the US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Israel sovereignty on Golan Heights.

‘The US presidential declaration on Israel’s right to annex the Syrian Golan is condemnable and breaches all rules of international law, undermining any effort to reach a just peace,” Lebanese media ‘NNA’ earlier quoted the Foreign Ministry of Lebanon as saying.

‘The principle of land for peace falls…for when there is no land to be restored, no peace remains to be given,’ the statement reads.

Syrian Foreign Ministry too has said that in a flagrant aggression on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic, the US President has recognized the annexation of the occupied Syrian Golan to the Zionist occupation entity.

The US decision indicates US hostility against Arab world, the statement said, adding that Washington proved that it is the most important enemy of the Arab world.
