Iran, leading country in region in 4th decade after Revolution: Russian official

IRNA – A Russian official said here on Monday that Iran, in the the fourth decade after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, is a leading and independent country as well as a decisive player in the region.

In an exclusive interview with IRNA here, member of Russia’s Council for Ethnic Groups and Nationalities Esmaeil Shabanov said that Iran has barred establishment of the US dictatorship in the region.

He said Iran is not a country the fate of which could be decided in Brussels where the European Union has seats.

After US May 2018 exit from the Iran Deal formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Washington re-imposed anti-Tehran sanctions, pressing world countries to cut transactions and deals with Iran. European countries as well as a number of other world powers like China, India and Japan declined to do so and worked on a new financial channel to challenge the US pressures. France, Germany and Britain opened a transaction channel named INSTEX – Instrument In Support Of Trade Exchanges- on January 31 to help continue trade with Iran.

Shabanov further said that the United States was dreaming of dominating the world after the 1991 dissolution of Soviet Union, but never imagined that the Islamic Revolution would emerge as the main hurdle for Washington’s goals.

Elaborating on Iran’s achievements after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Russian official said Islamic Republic has played an effective role in enhancing the status of successful to the Iranians.

On Iran’s regional policies, the official said Tehran follows an independent policy in the Middle East region.

He added that Tehran has presently turned into a regional power that can defend its interests without any help from the world super powers.

Iran has the final say on the regional developments, he stressed.

In the past forty years during which Iran managed to the US sanctions, the struggle made Iran a role model for other countries inspiring them to stand against the United States, he added.

Pointing to Iran’s capability and influence extended to outside its borders in the course of four decades, the official said the country has also gained many political successes in Syria and Iraq and some parts of Afghanistan as well.
