44 aftershocks rock western Iran

IRNA The 5.9-magnitude earthquake in Gilan-e-Gharb in the western province of Kermanshah has so far been followed by 44 aftershocks, a local official said.

Head of Kermanshah Seismological Center Farhad Norouzi told IRNA on Monday that four aftershocks were between 4-5 Richter.

Referring to the fatal 7.3-measuring earthquake which hit the provincial city of Salas Babajani in Kermanshah on November 12, 2017 killing 620 people and injuring about 12,000 others, he said some 6,450 aftershocks have so far been registered in this area.

An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale shook Gilangharb in Kermanshah Province on Sunday.

According to the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor occurred at 17: 11 hours local time (13:41 GMT) on Sunday at the depth of 10 km underground.

Earlier Spokesman of Iran's emergency services Mojtaba Khaledi said no casualties reported in western Iran quake.

Iran sits on major fault lines and is prone to near-daily earthquakes.
