Iranian officials voice support for Yemeni peace talks

December 12, The Iran Project - Top Iranian officials including President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign MinisterMohammad Javad Zarifreiterated the country's support for the intra-Yemeninegotiations, referring to the ongoing UN-mediated talks in Sweden between delegations from Yemens Houthi Ansarullah movement and the countrys former Saudi-backed regime.

The talks are meant to end nearly four years of a bloody Riyadh-led war, which was launched in early 2015 to reinstall Yemens former Saudi-friendly government

During a meeting of the heads of the three branches of government in Tehran on Tuesday (Dec. 11), the Iranian president saidthe invaders have come to the realization that making peace with the Yemeni nation is the only option available to them.

He added thattoday, there are more signs than before of striding toward peace in Yemen.

Meanwhile, the Iranian foreign minister expressed his support in a tweet and wrote, "Iran welcomes initial agreements between Yemeni parties in Stockholm under supervision of UNSG envoy, and strongly supports continuation of talks to achieve final accords on all issues. It is well past time for foreign aggressors to end their airstrikes & crimes against humanity."

In another development,Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said the United States is complicit in the crimes the Saudi regime has been committing in a years-long war against the people of Yemen.

The Leader said the Saudis have extended a hand of friendship to the enemies of Islam.

"They (the Saudis) thought they would gain control [of Yemen] in a matter of days or weeks. [But] the farther they go, the harder they will fall down and the more stinging will be the blow that they will receive," Ayatollah Khamenei noted.

Some 16,000 Yemenis have been killed and thousands more injured since the onset of the Saudi-led aggression.
