Iran's president urges immediate handling of problems in quake-hit areas

IRNA During a phone conversation with the governor of the western Kermanshah Province, Iran's president Hassan Rouhani on Monday urged immediate addressing of issues in quake-stricken areas.

During his phone conversation with Houshang Bazvand, President Rouhani emphasized planning for temporary settlements in quake-hit areas and addressing relevant issues.

Rouhani praised the quake-stricken people for their patience, ensuring them the officials will immediately solve any resultant problems.

Kermanshah's governor said based on the latest figures, 729 people have been maimed, out of which 700 have been treated on site and released and 18 are hospitalized.

No fatalities have been reported, Bazvand said, adding 13 groups are evaluating the damage incurred.

The strong 6.3 magnitude earthquake jolted 17 kilometers west of the Iranian city of Sarpol-e-Zahab in Kermanshah Province, 18 kilometers from Qasr-e Shirin and 33 kilometers from the city of Gilan-e-Gharb at 20:07 hours local time (16:37 GMT) on Sunday.

The quake was also felt in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

Gripped by fear, people poured into streets and parks. Reports, however, say they have resumed normal life.

161 aftershocks have so far followed the earthquake.
