EU believes no credible peaceful alternative to Iran nuclear deal exists

Sputnik The European Union believes that there is no credible peaceful alternative to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly referred to as the Iran nuclear deal, Vera Jourova, the European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, said.

"There is no credible peaceful alternative tothe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction. The deal withIran is a key element ofthe global nuclear non-proliferation architecture," Jourova said duringa plenary session ofthe European Parliament onWednesday.

Jourova noted that preserving the Iran nuclear deal was a matter ofsecurity forthe whole global community.

The official added that the European Union did not recognize the US extra-terrestrial sanctions arising fromWashingtons withdrawal fromthe JCPOA.
"We, Europeans, cannot accept that a foreign power, not even our closest friend and ally, takes decisions overour legitimate trade withanother country. The ongoing work, led byFrance, Germany and the United Kingdom, aims atpreserving the full and effective implementation ofthe Plan ofAction inall its aspects and inline withUN Security Council Resolution 2231," Jourova pointed out.

Her speech was broadcast bythe European Commission video service.

US President Donald Trump has fora long time been a critic ofthe Iran nuclear deal negotiated byhis predecessor Barack Obama. In May, Trump announced the US withdrawal fromthe agreement, which ensures the re-imposition ofWashingtons sanctions onIran, overTehran's alleged failure tocomply withthe JCPOA, something denied byTehran. Two rounds ofsanctions have been reintroduced sincethen, withthe large-scale restrictions covering oil exports being slapped onIran onNovember 5.

However, other signatories tothe deal Iran, China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the European Union condemned the US withdrawal and said they would abide bythe agreement.

The remaining parties tothe agreement have taken steps toensure that their trade withIran will continue afterthe re-imposition ofthe US sanctions. Particularly, European diplomats have proposed toset upthe so-called Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) facilitating trade betweenEuropean companies and Iran amidUS sanctions.
