Iranian city up for UNESCO registration

IRNA Gonbad-e Kavus city has been nominated for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage City registration for its Turkmen rugs, said the Golestan provincial cultural heritage official on Sunday.

World or national registration of a citys handicrafts chiefly aims at popularizing them, said the Director General of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of Golestan Province Maryam Hajiebrahimi in the meeting held to prepare for registration.

The prerequisites needed for registration including the organizing the carpet-weavers and installing boards around the city must be implemented, she added.

Gonbad-e Kavus governor, for his part, said, Registering Turkmen rug along with previously-registered historical monument, Gonbad-e Qabus Tower, demonstrates the citys cultural richness.

Abdolghadir Karimi described the two cultural heritages as a great opportunity to introduce the city and its potentials to the world.

He added that a special workgroup has been organized in order to facilitate the registration process of Turkmen rug.

More than half of the 350,000 population of Gonbad-e Kavus city are Turkmens, who are skillful in making handicrafts, specially rugs.
